Awareness Education
The Center’s educators often visit schools, places of worship, and other community spaces to facilitate conversations on intimate partner and sexual violence, healthy relationships, bullying prevention, and The Center’s services. If you would like to request a speaker for an event, class, or meeting, please complete the below form. One month’s notice for presentation requests is ideal to allow time for scheduling and assigning an educator.
Dependent on the age group of the audience and the content you would like covered, our educators may facilitate discussion on one of the following topics:
When You See A Bully: Grades K-2
- Discussion of what bullying looks like to the students, how bullying makes them feel, and what they think might be able to stop a bully.
- Movie: When You See a Bully. Depicts three different scenarios for stopping a bully: Be A Friend, Stop Bullies Together, and Tell a Grown-Up.
- Discussion of what we can do when we see a bully based on what they see in the film, including some barriers that the children in the film faced and the importance of the student’s safety.
Gum In My Hair: Grades 3-5
- Discussion of what bullying looks like to the students; the differences between joking, teasing, and bullying; who is involved in bullying (bully, target, bystander); why they think people bully.
- Movie: Gum In My Hair. Focuses on what it is to be a target of bullying and some tips to help avoid being targeted (or to stop bullying if it has already started).
- Discussion of the tips in the movie as well as how we can also utilize those tips as bystanders.
Step In, Speak Up: Grades 6-8
- Discussion of what bullying looks like to the students; who is involved in bullying (bully, target, bystander); what is the bystander’s role and what are some obstacles bystanders face.
- Movie: Step In, Speak Up. Recent film created by The Center starring local high school students which discusses bullying and depicts 4 scenarios in which bystanders play a key role in putting a stop to bullying.
- Discussion of three different ways bystanders can stop bullying: Step In, Hand Off, and Sidetrack.
- Activity: What Would You Do? Students will receive our TweenZines.
Healthy Relationships: Grades 9-12 (1 to 3 sessions)
- Begin with conflict resolution, including warning signs, solutions, and scenarios. Proceed to an exercise in which students discuss or volunteer information about different characteristics they want and need in a relationship or dating partner.
- Transition into a brief discussion of respect: How do the students define it? What does it look like to them in relationships? What are some signs of a healthy relationship?
- Presentation of a few statistics about dating violence in order to illustrate prevalence.
- Movie: Know the Signs. Portrays escalating signs of an abusive relationship.
- Discussion of warning signs, and what one can do if in an abusive relationship or a bystander. Students will receive our TeenZines.
Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence Overview: Adult Audiences
- Begin with definitions and dynamics of sexual violence and intimate partner violence.
- Discussion of power and control dynamics, consent, and barriers to leaving unhealthy relationships or reporting sexual assault.
- Present a brief overview of trauma and its impacts.
- Discussion of how to intervene and prevent violence as an active bystander.
Overview of The Center’s Services: Teen and Adult Audiences
- Provide an overview of the services available to those impacted by sexual assault and intimate partner violence.
- Explain how to access The Center’s services or refer a loved one.
